Wayfair's Core Component Documentation Kickoff

The Core Component team, a user of Wayfair's Design System Site, has spent the last six months creating unique components and variations for their designers and engineers. Many of these components are outside of the scope of the Design System team, and as such, are the responsibility of the Core Component team to document and own.

Unfortunately, their team did not have any content strategy, technical writers, or content designers. This meant that the team had a sizable backlog of components that didn't have any documentation and a team of designers and engineers who weren't sure where to start.

I came in as a subject matter expert, when the team submitted a request, with a 24-hour turn around, to provide support and guidance to their team in order to kickoff a documentation cycle. As the lead content strategist and technical writer on Wayfair's design system site, Homebase, I created and presented documentation strategy to the Core Component Team. I added net-new slides into their deck, and gathered feedback from engineers, designers, and program managers to guide the presentation. I also sought out volunteers from the Homebase team to share and attend the kickoff, so we were able to fully support the new team in building a solid documentation strategy.

By being a collaborative partner and subject matter expert, I was able to support this team in preparing to clean up a six-month backlog of content.
